Kick-off Ceremony of the Youth Difference Makers Award (YMDA) at SCGMC
To launch the worthy cause of 'being a Difference Maker' in our School and among our School Community, our College has organized a Kick-off Ceremony of Youth Difference Makers Award (YDMA) on Monday, 12th December, 2011. The Ceremony, themed 'Be a Difference Maker' aims at encouraging our students to make a difference in the lives of others, to lead a more meaningful and fulfilled life as well as to make our community a better place for everyone.
As the joining of the YDMA Scheme has been a whole school endeavour for SCGMC, it will be most meaningful to start off the Youth Difference Makers Movement in a launching ceremony from one of the participating schools like S. C Gaw. In the words of Rick Hansen, it is hoped that 'Together, we can make this moment the beginning of the greatest movement for positive change in our history." It is our greatest honour to have Dr Christine Leung Chi Mei, Vice Chair, Direction Association for the Handicapped (梁子微博士) and Mr Kenneth Wu Kee Huen, Education Services Secretary of TWGHs and Academic Board, HKIIEL (吳奇壎先生) to be our officiating guests. Other honourable guests include Ms Ella Lau, Director, HKSCIF (劉懿翎女士), Ms Suzanne Poon, Chairlady, HKSCIF (潘黃美玲女士), Dr K C Pang, Chairman, Academic Board, HKIIEL (彭敬慈博士) , Mrs Julie Ma, Academic Board, HKIIEL (馬李敏慧女士). It is also our very special delight to have the support from the YDMA participating schools such as Mr Chan Hon Ling, Principal of Kiangsu-Chekiang College (Shatin), Ms Lee Sau Ying, Principal of TWGHs Wong See Sum Primary School, teachers and students from Marymount Primary School.
The Ceremony was started by the speeches from Ms Ella Lau and Mrs Suzanne Poon. To be followed by the Open Dialogue of Dr Christine Leung and Mr Kenneth Wu which was particularly heart touching. Dr Christine Leung recalled how she has made her life more meaningful and fruitful in these 22 years in spite of being handicapped and paralyzed from the neck down after an accident. Dr Leung's personal story of perseverance, endurance, tolerance, never give-up and positive character as well as life-long learning capacity has been an inspiration to all our teachers and students.
We expect our students not only to excel in their studies but also become all-round students with a genuine heart to serve. Last year, our students participated enthusiastically and setting their goals in voluntary service. 180 students were commended for Volunteer Service with 47 students got the Gold Award (with service hours of more than 200), 75 were given the Silver Award (with service hours from 100 to 199) and 58 the Bronze Award (with service hours from 50 to 99). 3 awardees from F.3 & F.4 did share with us their experience and gains in voluntary services. The performance of our Student Band S to S on some inspirational songs was both sensational and thought-provoking. The Kick-off Ceremony marked the highlights of the movement. Big balls of '動感人、人感動' were passing out and reached to the audience. The hall was overwhelmingly rejoiced with laughter and joy. All of us with our wrist bands holding high and cried:
幫助別人 Make a difference in the lives of others
Lead a more meaningful & fulfilled life
Make our community a better place!
Guests, teachers and student representatives signed a Pledge for being a Difference Maker. Before closing, there is a Choral Singing. In the tune of a lovely song, Proud of You, the Difference Maker Movement at SCGMC was launched.
