Staff Development by Mr. Archie McGlynn—S.C.Gaw as an EMI school

On 18 June 2012, teachers of S.C.Gaw participated in a training program organized by Mr. Archie McGlynn, the director of Hong Kong Schools Self-Evaluation Network. As S.C.Gaw is embarking on the journey to become an EMI-ready school in the coming years, the advice of Mr. McGlynn, having had extensive experience leading the Quality Assurance Team of EDB before, is much pertinent and relevant. Here is the rundown of the training:

Set+ Intro + reiterating school policy of what SC Gaw is regarding English as MOI (15 mins)

2. Discussion of Pros and Cons of using English as MOI

Group works. Groups writing down the issues, the concerns, the opportunities and the challenges on the posters (25 mins)

3. Informal Group Sharings supported by Archie & junior form Science & I.H. teachers

1440 - 1540

Informal sharing and discussion involving the
audience instead of formal presentations. Supporting teachers:
Mr. Yip K.P., Ms. Ko S.Y., Mr. Wong C.M. & Ms. Tsui C.L. (40 mins)

4. Video Clipping Showing & Further Discussion

1540 - 1550

Stimulating discussion on the use of the language and comparing with the issues raised in the discussions before .(30 mins)

5. Summing up and conclusions by Archie and Principal Tang

1550 - 1600

Summary and the way forward. Supporting teachers and Mr. Edward Chu may also be involved if necessary. (10 mins)
