Talk by NPC Deputies CPPCC Member, Mr. Peter Wong Man Kong, BBS, JP—History and Culture of our Country
港區全國人大代表政協委員王敏剛先生講座──國家的文化歷史
It was the honour of our school to have the NPC Deputies CPPCC Member, Mr. Peter Wong Man Kong, BBS, JP talking to the students on "The History and Culture of our Country". Mr. Wong appreciated Confucianism (儒家思想) and treasured the values of Confucian way of life to our modern world. He told students the core values in Confucianism that made it so special and distinct from other ancient civilization. He further elaborated the meaning of Country that in Chinese integrated the sense of "Being a whole family". His speech lasted for 45 minutes and then came the climax—Question and Answer Section—that took the remaining 45 minutes. Students there were unexpectedly enthusiastic. They raised critical questions covering a wide range of political issues such as June 4th Incident, Cultural Revolution, Effects of Confucianism, Corrupt Practices of Chinese Officials and even the Impact to Hong Kong after the Resumption of Sovereignty by our Mother Country. Mr. Wong took this opportunity to demonstrate how matters could be analyzed and how critical thinking could be achieved after taking into consideration of values, attitudes and beliefs from various angles and perspectives. It was an outstanding Liberal Studies lesson and students had learned a lot from such a great speaker.
