Staff Development – To Foster Learning Effectiveness through ‘Looking at Students’ Work’
教師培訓 - 透過課業評估促進學習成效
A piece of student work needs the adequate and comprehensive preparation. By looking at students’ work, the professional educators work together to identify what learning problems students may meet across and generate methods and solutions so as to assess the learning outcome of students. On 2nd January, 2013, a staff development programme was held for teachers of S.C.Gaw focusing on ‘LASW’.
The first part of the program was handled by our Principal, Agnes Tang. As an educator with tremendous experiences on quality assurance for schools, she shared her experiences and understandings of ‘LASW’ with all the teachers at school. She clearly introduced the objectives and purposes of quality assignments and the guidelines of designing the meaningful assignments for students. She further explained how the effective learning of students can be facilitated through different types of assessments. With practical examples, teachers are expected to design the meaningful assignments based on some basic principles.
Some colleagues from the English department, the Chinese department and the Physics department shared some good students’ work with us. With the help of the marking guidelines, teachers are expected to identify the learning difficulties of students and think about how students can make further improvements in their studies through a series of correction activities. Teachers are encouraged to develop a variety of assignments for students with different learning abilities.
Although our teachers have the massive experience of designing and marking the students’ assignments, it is the right time for them to evaluate what they have done and consider the best ways to make the assessment process more effective, meaningful and fruitful for their students.
