26 to 29 June 2013
S.4 Environmental Protection Study Tour to Taiwan
中四級台灣環保遊學團

To arouse the understanding of students on environmental protection, a study tour was organized for S.4 students from 26th to 29th June, 2013. On 26th June, students and teachers woke up early at 4:00 am and gathered at the Hong Kong International Airport. We took the first flight to Taipei. It was challenging since we never woke up so early.

During the four days, we visited a lot of environmental protection facilities in Taiwan. They included Recycle Station organized by Taiwan's Tzu Chi Foundation (台灣慈濟基金會), Nuclear Plant Exhibition Centre, Landfill, Beitou Library (北投圖書館), Yehiu Geopark (野柳地質公園) and Shangri-La Ranch (香格里拉農場). Besides, we learnt the culture and history of Taiwan by visiting Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall (中正紀念堂), National Palace Museum (故宮博物院), Chiufen (九份山城), Taipei 101 (台北101) and Shilin Night Market (士林夜市).

The night in Shangri-La Ranch was unforgettable. We played gyro, producing glutinous rice balls and lighted up sky lanterns. We put down blessing sentences on the sky lanterns and we were all excited when the lanterns were rising up to the sky.

All-round education was provided to students during the trip and it started right after the time the students made the decision for the trip. Many of the students had to apply their first Hong Kong Passports and the Entry Permits to Taiwan. Some students, born in Mainland China, even had to go directly to the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (臺北經濟文化辦事處) to apply for their Visas. Documentations aside, the whole journey required students to speak in Mandarin and they were divided into groups to take care of their members and finish their group reports.

The journey was supported by the Community Care Fund (關愛基金). With the help of the fund, poor families could support their students to take part in study tours and obtained the precious opportunities to learn outside Hong Kong boundary.
